Wild weather - SH1 reopening but residents face devastating scenes at home Sun, 18 Jul 2021, 9:24AM
State Highway 1 in Marlborough is reopening and evacuated residents from three settlements have been told they can return home from lunchtime on Sunday.
But on the other side of the island, West Coast residents face heartache, with flood-ravaged streets and homes.
The Marlborough District Council said State Highway 1, including the Wairau River Bridge, was expected to reopen from midday on Sunday. All evacuated residents from Tuamarina, Spring Creek and the Lower Wairau can return to their homes from midday.

New Plymouth Astronomical Society president Leith Roberston took a photograph of the last total eclipse clearly seen from New Plymouth on January 31 2018, shortly before cloud cover obscured the view.
Taranaki residents will have the chance to spot the first appearance of a super blood moon in 39 years late on Wednesday night. But they will need to be ready as the rare phenomenon will only last for 14 minutes. The region is among a number of areas in the country – mainly on the west coast of both islands – where clear skies are forecast. A super blood moon occurs only when three factors are in combination: a full moon, the Moon being closest to the Earth in its orbit (known as perigee), and there is a total lunar eclipse, National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) meteorologist Ben Noll said.
“There has been a lot of great mahi happening around the region and some incredible initiatives that our community is working on, but there is still a large programme of work to be done. The focus remains to continue to bring people together and to gain support to move the mahi forward.” A new kiwifruit operation in Waitotara, Ara Ake, the partnership of Hiringa Energy and Ballance Agri-Nutrients and the Taranaki Crossing are some of the projects happening around the maunga. The roadshow is open to everyone, Gilliland said. ‘’Taranaki 2050 is really broad because when you think about a low-emissions future it impacts everybody. The vision that our community created for our community for 2050 is very much an intergenerational holistic vision, including things like health and wellbeing, as much as it does economy and jobs.’’
