Photo courtesy Sasha Creed - RISHI MAHARAJ Within recent weeks the University of the West Indies (UWI) has been in the news both locally and regionally. Most of the discussion has centred around the recent recommendations of the Report of the Chancellor’s Commission on Governance. The aim of my column this week is not to focus on the recommendations of the report (for there are numerous opinions being offered throughout the region). Instead, I would like to look at the issues surrounding the UWI and universities in general through a different lens, the lens of relevance, particularly from the point of view of those who would reach the age to pursue higher education within the next decade – generation alpha. ....
Professor Hubert Devonish A trade union representing more than 1,000 staff members at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus is proposing that private sector companies pay an increased tax of half of one per cent to help fund the running of the region’s premier education institution. The West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) Jamaica also proposes that the number of postgraduate students at the Mona campus be increased in order to bring in more money for the institution. The proposals were included in a response to the UWI Chancellor s commission on governance report which recommended, among other things, that students pay 40 per cent of tuition costs, up from the current 20 per cent, while government’s share of tuition costs be lowered from 80 per cent to 60 per cent. ....

February 01, 2021 In 2001 when UNC was in power, I objected to its endorsement of Dr Bhoe Tewarie as principal of The University of the West Indies (UWI). I argued that Tewarie was not sufficiently prepared for such a position, his having only attained the status of lecturer in his academic career. Readers can determine the truth or falsity of my position. In May 2017, when PNM recommended that Robert Bermudez serve as Chancellor of the university, I depicted his appointment in a satirical manner since I couldnt take his appointment seriously. I believed he wasnt the man for the job. ....
