JOHANNESBURG - Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan on Wednesday said he did not seek a meeting with Chief Justice Mogoeng Mooeng in 2016 to discuss the appointment of close friend Judge Dhaya Pillay who was seeking a position at the Supreme Court of Appeal at the time.
This comes after Mogoeng revealed on Tuesday that then-Finance Minister Gordhan had asked him how his close friend had fared after she had just completed an interview for the vacancy. ....

“As I recall, after the completion of a cordial discussion, I, in passing, did refer to judge Pillay’s interview with the JSC. He responded and I left.
“Though, like the CJ, I cannot recall the contents of the meeting, I did not meet him to discuss judge Pillay. It was entirely incidental to the purpose of the meeting.”
Gordhan said, at that time, it was already public knowledge that judge Pillay had not been recommended for appointment to the SCA.

JOHANNESBURG - Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan is denying ever trying to influence Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng in the appointment of judges.
The minister says in April 2016, he only mentioned Judge Dhaya Pillay s interview with the Judicial Service Commission in passing, as he s a friend of hers.
Pillay had been interviewed for a position at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Gordhan says he does not recall the agenda of the meeting with Mogoeng but he insists it was not to discuss Pillay. ....

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wants Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to investigate the allegations of impropriety against Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan

This comes after Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng revealed on Tuesday that Gordhan, who was finance minister at the time, inquired about appointment of Dhaya Pillay to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Mogoeng told the Judicial Service Committee that he feared Gordhan attempted to influence the appointment of a friend.

EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu opened a criminal complaint against Gordhan at Hillbrow Police Station on Wednesday morning. ....
