The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a new automated Lost & Stolen Device System (LSDS) for blocking of lost, stolen and snatched mobile phones.
“The new system will provide ease and facilitation to users who want to get mobile phone blocked in case it has been stolen, snatched or lost,” a statement issued by the country’s telecom authority said.
Complainants can easily file a request with the PTA for blocking the IMEI of such handset to prevent it from potential misuse, it added. ....

Broadband subscriptions in Pakistan reach 100 million
Dawn, PTA said there were fewer than 2m subscriptions in 2012, but after the introduction of 3G service the figure jumped to 16m in 2014 and now stood at 100m.
The telecom sector regulator claimed that currently around 87 per cent of the country’s population had access to internet/broadband services at one of the lowest rates in the region.
Moreover, broadband is provided over 3G/4G networks with an average download speed of 17.7Mbps and upload speed of 11.3Mbps (mobile) which is above the speed levels in other regional countries, it claimed.
Mobile data prices declined to only 0.70 percent of the gross national income (GNI) per capita which is well below the UN Broadband Commission’s recommendation of less than 2 percent. ....

Pakistan: 1.2 million smartphones manufactured in first two months of 2021

Islamabad: Pakistan’s mobile phone manufacturing industry witnessed an encouraging trend with the production of 1.21 million mobile phones in the first two months of 2021. These phones were manufactured at the 33 local mobile devices assembly plants in Pakistan.
The number of smartphones assembled and produced in January and February 2021 indicate a significant increase as compared to the last two years. The country produced 2.1 million smartphone devices in 2020 and 119,639 in 2019, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The country has produced over 25 million mobile devices including 4G smartphones following the successful implementation of PTA’s Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS).
“With the successful execution of DIRBS, the local assembly industry has evolved from infancy to well-growing stage, with significant growth seen in the local assembly of smartphones,” PTA said. The system implemented in 2019 also led ....
