SHELTON The city is responsible for student transportation at a set cost of $3.15 million to be covered by the Board of Education.
But are schools getting the right bang for the buck?
That’s the question asked recently by Democrat Board of Apportionment and Taxation members at its recent workshop examining Mayor Mark Lauretti’s proposed 2021-22 budget.
His proposed $128.2 million spending plan is a $43,728 increase from the present year.
“The city has created a department … but they do not have detailed line items reflected in the budget,” A&T member Michelle Laubin said at the workshop. “That’s not OK.” ....

I would like to offer my insight into the views of Shelton Alderman Anthony Simonetti in his letter dated March 9. He states: “The recent short comings and criticisms of the SSTS are, however, not fair nor deserved.” The criticism is deserved, and every resident should be demanding answers.
Issues with the buses started before COVID. Service has been a problem since the BOE was forced to accept the city as their transportation supplier. When the city started in July 2019, bus drivers were driving their runs without having been properly vetted and drug tested. The first day of school in September 2019 was delayed because the city did not have enough drivers. Bus runs were overcrowded with students sitting in the aisles. There was an incident where a driver was pulled over, with kids on the bus, and removed for being drunk. There were times in 201 ....

Alderman Anthony Simonetti wrote a very interesting letter saying that the school bus problem is not city hall’s fault and parents are wrong for the outlandish demand of their children being provided transportation to school.
The crux of this problem is that the city laid off really good personnel in the middle of a bus driver shortage. Now Mr. Simonetti seems shocked that those good staff members, who in his own words are in obvious demand, went out and found good jobs elsewhere leaving our kids without the service they are mandated to receive. ....
