Three incumbent candidates are running again for seats on the Shelter Island Board of Education. Board President Kathleen Lynch and members Margaret Colligan and Karina Montalvo all are seeking election. No other candidates have filed petitions to put their names on the ballot. The top two vote getters will each be elected to three-year terms while the third person will be elected to a term expiring at the end of June 2022. Ms. Lynch struggled with her decision, not because she hasn’t loved her service, she said, but because she completed her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and is focusing on developing her new practice. ....
FIT Center to be dedicated to Garth Griffin Former recreation director Garth Griffin’s funeral was a reminder of Island traditions. The Shelter Island Board of Education Monday night unanimously approved a resolution requested by Councilman Jim Colligan and Kim Reilly, the chairwoman of the Recreation Committee, to dedicate the FIT Center for the late Garth Griffin who died on Jan. 27, 2020, just a week after his 67th birthday. Mr. Griffin was hired as the town’s recreation director in May 1981 and held the post until his retirement in the summer of 2017. “He loved this community,” Mr. Colligan said in making the request. “He was so proactive with the kids,” he said. ....
Gender neutral school bathroom policy on deck Shelter Island School. (Credit: Ambrose Clancy) The Shelter Island Board of Education offered a first reading of a policy Monday evening creating gender neutral single occupancy bathrooms at the school. The policy is in line, officials said, with creating and maintaining an inclusive educational and work environment. If the policy is adopted it would designate all single-occupancy bathroom facilities as gender neutral for use by no more than one occupant at a time or for family or assisted use. Graduation plans With the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, school officials went out of their way to implement special activities around the graduation of the class of 2020. ....
