Efo juju textbooks: Ghana Publishers Association apologises

The Ghana Publishers Association has apologised to Ghanaians for the “poor work” done on the History of Ghana – Textbook 3, by Badu Nkansah Publications, which portrayed Ewes in a negative way.
The Association is, therefore, calling for calm and assured the public of its commitment to apply its internal disciplinary mechanisms to the publisher.
This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Asare Konadu Yamoah, the President of the Association, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
The Association has been following recent issues in respect of some textbooks published for schools in Ghana. ....

NaCCA orders withdrawal of all unapproved textbooks in circulation

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has ordered the withdrawal of all unapproved textbooks from both public and private schools in the country.
“NaCCA is also warning all publishing houses who have published unapproved offensive books to withdraw all stock from the market immediately or face the full rigours of the law,” it said.
The directive follows a public uproar on social media from members of the Ewe ethnic group after portions of some textbooks went viral over the weekend.
Taking to Twitter and Facebook, many had argued that the History of Ghana, Text Book 3 by Badu Nkansah Publications and Golden English Basic 4 and History of Ghana Basic 6 published by Golden Publications contain inappropriate references to personalities and ethnic groups especially the Ewe tribe. ....

Africa Education Watch has called on the National Security Secretariat to probe how some primary school textbooks containing stereotypical content about Ewes, found their way onto the market in commercial quantities when they had not been approved.
“We call for further investigations by National Security to ascertain how samples of books submitted to NaCCA by the publishers and queried by same in September 2020, found their way in commercial quantities unto the Ghanaian book market in 2021”, the group said in a statement.
