The organiser of Bay Dreams is upset that the team behind Rhythm & Vines has scheduled competing events for the summer festival season, calling it “desperate play”. New electronic extravaganza Gold Rush will be held in Waihi on January 3, the same day as the first Bay Dreams at Mount Maunganui, while Golden Sounds will take place in Blenheim on January 5, clashing with Bay Dreams in nearby Nelson. Bay Dreams promoter Mitch Lowe, from Audiology Touring, said it was a “disheartening reality they felt the need to put their festivals on the same day and neighbouring regions as ours”. ....
“We’re at the mercy of the artists to some extent.” But he wasn’t concerned the market was over-saturated, saying it was “exciting that New Zealand can cater for multiple festivals on one day”. Stuff Hamish Pinkham, who founded Rhythm & Vines and now Golden Run, said there was plenty of room for more summer festivals. New Years Eve festival Rhythm & Vines had sold out months in advance and had a “huge waiting list”, Pinkham said, which was testament to the Kiwi appetite for music festivals. “People can choose with their wallets and their regions,” he said. “Waihi and Marlborough are starved for entertainment, so it’s great to bring a taste of what we do to the regions.” ....
