Governments across the globe have started moving their operations to the cloud with varying degrees of speed and success. The Government of Canada has leveraged cloud to optimize some back-office functions and service delivery; but Technation, Canada’s IT association, says we lag behind cloud adoption leaders.
The obstacles to public sector adoption are well known: hesitancy to replace complex legacy systems, budgetary pressures, skills and human resources, security concerns and complex procurement models. The biggest barrier to cloud adoption is also the most overlooked. Many underestimate the value of cloud, viewing it as a simple IT innovation – a new set of boxes and wires – when in fact it has become an essential building block of a modern progressive government.
