Carter Center Launches Inform Women, Transform Lives Global Campaign Share March 08, 2021 ATLANTA (March 8, 2021) The Carter Center today launched the Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, a groundbreaking global effort to help ensure that women can seek and receive information from their governments. Inform Women, Transform Lives consists of three major elements raising awareness about women’s right to access public information; working with the campaign’s 13 inaugural cities to help them get information to women about city services that could benefit them; and advocating for politicians and policymakers to build women’s access to information into national and international laws and regulations. ....
Inform Women, Transform Lives Campaign launches today to coincide with International Women’s Day The focus of the campaign is to highlight awareness of women’s right to information and to encourage and assist women in accessing this information. The aim will be on improving the wellbeing, physical and ultimately mental health of the women living in the North East Inner City area by increasing their participation and engagement in sporting and recreational activities in the area. Speaking about the campaign, Lord Mayor Hazel Chu said “This joint venture between Dublin City Council and the Carter Institute presents a great opportunity to aim for a measurable improvement in the everyday lives of women living in the north east inner city area. This focus area was chosen because of the work already underway there under the Government’s North East Inner City Initiative focusing on the social and economic regeneration of the area. The campaign is a groundbreaking effort that aims to ensure that women can seek and receive impactful information from their governments and thrive in their communities. The Carter Center was founded by former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn. “We have chosen to join the Carter Center in launching this campaign because it will have a direct impact on our citizens’ everyday lives,” said the Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu. “Information gives women a more meaningful voice, increases their awareness of economic opportunities, allows them to participate in decision-making, and helps them access public services.” ....

The fundamental right of access to information is critical for both governments and the people they serve and is particularly crucial for women. It provides for a more meaningful voice, enabling women to participate in public life, access public services, and make better decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities. Yet for many women, the power of information remains unreachable. Women are less likely to demand and receive access to information, yet they are often responsible for earning income and caring for family; are more likely to be poor or illiterate; are less likely to participate or use their voices; are more susceptible to and affected by corruption; and are sometimes in danger of retribution in cultures dominated by men if they ask for information. ....
