Calls for Covid vigilance after sunny weather crowds

“Stay vigilant and help us recover,” – this was the message from the North-East’s leaders after a sunny weekend saw crowds of people descend on popular visitor spots.
The LA7 authorities said a number of locations across the region like parks, seasides and the Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside were busier at the weekend than earlier in the lockdown.
In a statement, leaders representing Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, and County Durham, urged residents to “continue to be vigilant.”
This comes a week before schools start welcoming back pupils, the first stage of Boris Johnson’s ambitious “road map” out of lockdown. ....

Lockdown rules broken over sunny weekend North East leaders say as they urge people to 'play their part'

Non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms and beer gardens are among the businesses which could reopen as early as April 12.
The statement says: “This weekend saw the good weather attract many people outdoors for their exercise. That’s understandable, but please remember to only meet up with one other person or stay within your household or support bubble, and stay local.

Government advice is that they continue to shield until at least 31 March, with those newly identified as ‘at risk’ also advised to start staying at home, with the exceptions of exercise and attending scheduled health appointments. This includes avoiding food shopping and visiting pharmacies.
Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, said the South Tyneside Covid-19 Community Support Hub continues to be available to assist at-risk people who are living on their own and have no other means of support, such as family, friends or neighbours, to help with access to essentials.
It is also available for those who are struggling with their wellbeing and need signposting to services, and the council is now writing to those newly identified people about the guidance and the local support that is available to them. ....
