The City of Melfort held their regular council meeting on Monday discussing a number of topics from vaccine clinics in Melfort, to drug houses, and an addition to some budget deliberations.

The Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort has been approved as a site for mass vaccine clinics ran by the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
The City of Melfort and the SHA have entered an agreement that begins on March 15, and runs until June 30, or longer if needed. Mayor Glenn George said while a pandemic wasn’t seen coming, things like this are what the KVC was built for. ....

Melfort finalizes capital projects for 2021 budget

Trent Mitchell, chair of the finance committee, said they have approved the total budget amount, with some spending allocations delayed until the fall.
This is because some local improvement projects are dependent on community approval for going ahead and if that does not happen, $160,000 can be distributed to other projects, specifically LED lights for city hall, Kerry Vickar Centre back up power, and a truck for the fire department.
“The local improvement that s being put forward to [property owners] is around curb, gutter, sidewalk, not paving. There s a percentage that the property owner has to pay in order to get those that service.” ....

Melfort Council getting closer to approving capital budget

The City of Melfort is getting very close to approving its Capital Budget for 2021.
On Thursday, Jan. 28 another Committee of the Whole Meeting was held to further discuss what things will look like in 2021, and future years.
For the City of Melfort’s General Capital Budget in 2021, its currently budgeted just over $66,000 worth of projects. However, that’s likely to change as projects are turned down or approved, leading other sections to be deferred to later dates.
Talks began on Thursday relating to the City of Melfort’s fleet, which includes various trucks, and equipment in various departments. For 2021, there are plans to replace six pieces of equipment in the city’s fleet. One of those however, does have a few variables the council members and administration are considering. A four-wheel drive truck replacement for the Fire Department is needed. ....

2020: The year that was in East Central Saskatchewan

On Jan. 30, the WHO declared the coronavirus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The first confirmed cases of the disease in Italy on Jan. 31. By March, Europe was considered the active centre of the disease.
On March 11, the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic.
Public facilities were closed down across east central Saskatchewan. Face-to-face teaching in schools ended. Public events were cancelled. Businesses closed down or found alternate ways to serve their customers.
The first case the East Central Recorder could confirm in the region was in Humboldt. The person in question contacted Mayor Rob Muench, who then confirmed with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. ....

Veterinary Service Board in process of selling clinic in Melfort, dissolving board

The Veterinary Services Board in the Melfort area is looking to tidy some things up and eventually dissolve the board.
The board was put in place in the 1970s after the Veterinary Services Act was put in place to help recruit vets to the rural areas of Saskatchewan. Since then, the board has owned the clinic on Broadway Avenue South that currently houses Mohawk Animal Clinic. The Veterinary Services Act has since been repealed and the board has been acting for a number of years without legislation.
“Now that the legislation is repealed, the board needs to cease existence,” Melfort City Councilor and Board Member Trent Mitchell said. “So, we need to divest ourselves of the assets associated with that.” ....
