BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts lawmakers are planning to hold an informational hearing this week to review the state’s preparedness for hurricanes and other natural disasters.
The Joint Committee on COVID-19 and Emergency Preparedness and Management will hold the virtual hearing on Friday at 1 p.m. The hearing will be livestreamed on legislature’s website.
Hurricane season begins on June 1st, making the hearing timely. One of the goals it so have the state align with the recent action taken by the federal government to better prepare for natural disasters.
President Joe Biden announced on Monday that he’s doubling U.S. emergency spending to help communities prepare for hurricanes and other extreme weather events, while launching a new effort at NASA to better understand and track the impact of climate change. ....

Governor Charlie Baker has been called to testify at a second legislative oversight hearing exploring Massachusetts’s COVID-19 rollout, according to state lawmakers, who intend to drill down into his administration’s decision to entrust a handful of private companies with running its seven mass vaccination sites.
The March 23 hearing will explore what lawmakers called the rollout’s “technology infrastructure” as well as the public health and emergency response plans the state had spent two decades and millions of dollars creating ahead of the pandemic, legislators said Friday. ....

A Massachusetts state senator is calling on Gov. Charlie Baker to address concerns and answer questions about the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine in the commonwealth.
State Sen. Diana DiZoglio, a Democrat from Methuen, has requested that State Auditor Suzanne Bump conduct an audit if Baker and his administration do not provide answers.Sign up for our Newsletters
