Human-elephant conflict in Kenya heightens with increase in crop-raiding

 E-Mail
A new study led by the University of Kent s Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) has found that elephants living around the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, are crop-raiding closer to the protected area, more frequently and throughout the year but are causing less damage when doing so.
Findings show that the direct economic impact of this crop-raiding in the Trans Mara region has dropped, yet farmers have to spend more time protecting their fields, further reducing support for conservation in communities who currently receive few benefits from living with wildlife.
The research published by
Biological Conservation demonstrates the effects that climate change, agricultural expansion and increased cattle grazing within the reserve have had on elephant crop-raiding trends in the region. ....

South Africa reports decline in rhino poaching

news
South Africa reports decline in rhino poaching
South Africa has reported a decline in the number of rhinos killed by poachers, which officials say is partly the result of Covid-19 lockdowns.
Last year, 394 rhinos were killed for their horns in the country, a fall of 33% from the 594 recorded in 2019, the environment ministry said.
Lockdowns had restricted the movements of would-be poachers and rhino horn smugglers, it added.
It is the sixth year that recorded incidents in the country have fallen.
But conservationists warn that the rhino population in South Africa has plummeted in recent years and that poaching remains a big problem. ....

Ivory by any other name: Illegal trade thrives on eBay, study finds

Ivory by any other name: Illegal trade thrives on eBay, study finds
A new study finds that ivory is still being regularly traded on eBay, despite the e-commerce site prohibiting this kind of trade.
The study focused on the online trade of miniature Japanese sculptures called netsuke, which are traditionally made from ivory.
While the study suggests that eBay isn’t doing enough to deter and stop the illegal online trade of ivory, eBay and its NGO partners say they are jointly committed to combating these illicit activities.
Two miniature sculptures sold on eBay in December 2020: a tiny egg with a chick hatching through the shell, and an intricately carved man in traditional Japanese dress with a rat perched on his shoulder. The egg sold for $195 and the figure for $1,345. But there’s a problem. Both objects are made from a yellowish-white material that has crisscrossing patterns characteristic of elephant ivory a banned item on eBay. ....

Mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain may not deliver the desired outcomes for nature

 E-Mail
England s proposed mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain requirement for new developments might not deliver on promises to increase biodiversity, according to research being presented at British Ecological Society s Festival of Ecology.
A research team at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, University of Kent, analysed ecological changes occurring under Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)-type policies in four early-adopter councils in England. They found that although a net gain in biodiversity was being promised across the BNG assessments, these translated into considerable losses of habitat area. Habitat losses were compensated for by commitments to deliver higher quality habitats years later in the development project cycle. ....
