TSMC plans to boost production in China Authorities in Taiwan have approved a plan by semiconductor giant TSMC to boost production of computer chips in China. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. decided in April to reinforce production capability at its Nanjing plant at a cost of almost 2.9 billion dollars. The company plans to build a new production line and massively ramp up output by 2023 to help offset the global chip shortage for automobiles and other electronic devices. Taiwan s authorities approved the plan on Wednesday, after determining that the chips to be made in China are not cutting-edge. They also acknowledged TSMC s efforts to safeguard intellectual property and its intention to remain primarily based in Taiwan.
