What initially started as a pandemic job search became the latest canned boozy beverage to hit the local market. An effervescent blend of old and new, Hooch Booch hard kombucha offers a bit of a buzz and some old-school nostalgia by way of Prohibition-era inspiration. Founder Anna Zesbaugh has a background in hospitality management and corporate event planning, industries hit hard by the pandemic. Furloughed from her job, self-proclaimed “doer” Zesbaugh says sitting idly by was just not going to cut it, and so the job search began. But then the people of Denver went into full blown panic mode when, even if only for a few hours, everyone thought liquor stores were being shut down for good as part of the city s early response to COVID-19. I thought, ‘Wow, this feels a lot like Prohibition, Zesbaugh says. It sparked something in my mind, generally. And I’ve always enjoyed kombucha since it helps with gut health, and when hard kombucha came out, I thought that was ....
The 7 Most Creative Colorado Beers You Can Drink This Spring Taco seasoning? In a beer? It works.Brittany Anas • May 12, 2021 Even with hundreds of breweries and seemingly endless rotating taps, Colorado brewers continue to take to their labs and ferment novel new beers that fall into the “who would have thunk” category. This kind of limitless experimentation is a cornerstone of brewing in our sudsy state, which is how Oskar Blues convinced us yellow mustard belonged in beer and how WeldWerks’ Spaghetti Gose gained a cult following. In time for spring and at a point in history when we could all use a little more levity as we emerge from our COVID confinement brewers have dialed up the creativity with their spring releases. Yes, some of these beers are wild and wacky. Others sour or spicy. But one earns innovative marks for supporting social justice movements; and, at another brewery, a taproom manager’s saison is an exploration of his Cambodian roots ....
As you probably remember, March 17 St. Patrick s Day was closing time in 2020, the day that bars, breweries and restaurants across Colorado were forced to curtail in-house service as a way to try to slow the spread of COVID-19. Many of these establishments have noted this sad anniversary while appreciating the fact that they can now be open at limited capacity indoors and with outdoor seating. But to keep things from getting out of hand this St. Patrick s Day, the state s Liquor Enforcement Division warned watering holes that its officers will be out in force (and probably not in green suspenders). LED takes public safety concerns very seriously, and over-service violations may result in administrative action up to and including revocation of a liquor license, the agency noted. LED will be checking on health-order compliance and advises licensees to limit mixing with people you do not live with as much as possible to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. We have just sta ....
The six Grand County breweries that participated in the collaborative East Troublesome Pale Ale initiative were able to help raise $34,000 for the Grand Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps people who were evacuated, displaced or lost their homes to the devastating East Troublesome wildfire last year. And 27 home brewers who entered the East Troublesome home-brew competition were also part of the fundraising effort. Root Shoot Malting, alongside Colorado Hop Company and Propagate Labs, donated ingredients to the breweries for the beer; the recipe and ingredients were then made available to the home brewers, who were encouraged to brew their own version of the benefit beer, Root Shoot says. ....
A new documentary about beer, which debuts this month on the Untappd social beer app, includes guest appearances by a few Colorado legends, such as Julia Herz, former craft beer director at the Brewers Association, and Peter Bouckaert, the former New Belgium brewmaster who now owns Purpose Brewing. The film, called BEER! A Love Story, weaves together the stories of thirty international protagonists across multiple countries who speak the universal language of beer, the world’s most consumed fermented beverage, the producers say. It bridges the gap between Europe and America.to show the panorama of beer styles now replicated across the globe. For any foodie, movie buff, and beer or beverage fan, this is a must-watch film.” ....
