St Mary s site in Shaftesbury PLANS for a new special school for Dorset children at the former St Mary’s private school near Shaftesbury have been backed by Dorset Council. Social services director Theresa Leavy says the opportunities for the site are ‘boundless’ and may be able to provide short respite breaks and a range of education and training. The council intends to create a new special school for around 280 pupils after paying £10m for the school site when it came on the market about a year ago. Education and young people’s portfolio holder Cllr Andrew Parry said the school site would be able to offer the place at a third of the cost and in a third of the time – he told Thursday’s Cabinet meeting that had the council decided to start a similar development from scratch costs could have risen to £50m. ....
DORSET and BCP Council have successfully obtained £70,000 worth of funding from the government to create a list of local heritage assets across the county. The money has been secured from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and will fund a project to create a Local Heritage List for each council. The lists will be compiled using information gathered from Dorset residents and local partners through a digital form. The information will be available online and used in planning decisions affecting identified assets across the county. Cllr David Walsh, Dorset Council’s Portfolio holder for Planning, said the funding is “great news” for the county and its residents. ....
PLANS to create a new school and centre of excellence for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) near Shaftesbury have been given the go-ahead. The proposals for the former St Mary s School site, which will see the creation of a new school for around 280 pupils and a national centre of excellence, were approved by Dorset Council’s Cabinet. Councillor Andrew Parry, Dorset Council Portfolio holder for Children, Education and Early Help, said: “We have seized a unique opportunity to create something amazing for Dorset. We are determined to make Dorset the best place to grow-up by investing in forward thinking initiatives like this. ....

The cash was made available through the National Lottery Heritage Fund to improve access to the site with a new entrance, as well as creation of new ampitheatre-style seating, installation of lighting and landscaping. Further work planned at the site, due to start in the summer, will see a range of activities and events introduced at the site. The villa, one of a kind in the country, is to the rear of County Hall. ....
