Calling it an emotional boost, School District 186 Superintendent Jennifer Gill confirmed Monday that traditional in-person class graduation is a go for the three public high schools. Lanphier, Southeast and Springfield will have separate ceremonies at the Bank of Springfield Center on June 5 along with Glenwood High School. Each student will receive four tickets because the center is still operating at 25% capacity, Gill said, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will have to social distance and be required to wear masks at the ceremony, Gill said. Last year, students had the option of an individual stage experience, where they could receive their diplomas and dressed in cap and gown. Those graduations were held at the schools respective football stadiums or fields. ....
Buffy Lael-Wolf The Springfield Public Schools Board of Education will soon welcome two new members who could shift the balance on decisions like the best way for students to return in the fall. Both are newcomers to public office and work in the medical field. Both were also endorsed by the Springfield Education Association, which represents teachers in District 186. Erica Austin, who won the Subdistrict 6 seat, is deputy director for the office of community care at SIU School of Medicine, where she s assisted COVID-19 testing and vaccine efforts. She s also pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education administration. Austin beat Tom Shafer, a retired firefighter and frequent candidate for local office, and Michael Washington, a former District 186 employee and volleyball coach. ....

Mathis was one of the most outspoken advocates for getting students back into classrooms more quickly during the pandemic, while Lael-Wolf recommended a more cautious approach. Lael-Wolf received the endorsement of the Springfield Education Association. In the other contested Springfield school board race, another SEA-endorsed candidate, Erica Austin, easily defeated challengers Tom Shafer and Michael Washington to win the open subdistrict 6 seat being vacated by Judith Johnson.
