Tom Weitzel, retiring Riverside police chief who survived a shotgun blast, on how policing has changed

Anthony Vazquez / Sun-Times Three years into his job as a Riverside cop, Tom Weitzel survived a shotgun blast to the chest. He was checking on an illegally parked car in the summer of 1987 when a masked man stepped out and blasted him, striking him in his bulletproof vest, which saved his life. Weitzel remembers sitting in a hospital bed the next day with broken ribs and shotgun pellets in his eyes. “My wife wanted me to quit,” he says. “But this was my profession. I had to do something to support us.” Weitzel, 60, retired from the west suburban police department on Thursday after being chief since 2008 a post in which his public profile has been outsized for a chief of a small-town department.

Riverside Man Strangles Woman With Kids Present: Cops

UpdatedTue, Apr 27, 2021 at 6:12 am CT Reply Vincente Hernandez Jr., 23, of Riverside, was charged with aggravated felony domestic violence for choking the victim, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and two counts of resisting arrest. (Photo courtesy of Riverside Police Department) RIVERSIDE, IL A Riverside man strangled a woman and slammed a car door on her last week with small children present, police said. He is also accused of trying to choke the same woman a month ago in a nearby town, but that case was apparently dropped. About 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Riverside police received a number of 911 calls about a disturbance outside an apartment building in the 2800 block of South Harlem Avenue, according to a police news release. The woman who kept calling 911 was cut off, but dispatchers heard yelling in the background, police said.
