Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau s avalanche risk metric is rated as high today, April 19. According to CBJ s Emergency Management, the high temperatures at night and the increasing heat throughout the day will cause avalanche danger to rise through the afternoon and evening. Especially on sunny slopes, said the risk report. Tom Mattice with the Emergency Management office, says to stay off the Flume Trail and the gated areas behind Behrends Avenue while the risk remains high. He says to not park along Thane Road. ....
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Avalanche activity occurred in Juneau Tuesday night. We spoke to CBJ Emergency Programs Manager Tom Mattice for details about the avalanche. We had an avalanche come down the Looker s left side of the Behrends Avenue path at about 11:30 last night. I still haven t had a chance to document how big it is, but I know there was some activity. In the meantime, avalanche risk in Juneau was lowered from High to Considerable today, and Mattice was asked about the change. Moisture rates have decreased a little bit which should slow the activity up a little bit, but with above freezing temperatures around the region we re still going to see continued wet, loose avalanche activity and the potential for wet slab avalanche activity. ....

CBJ Emergency Programs Manager Tom Mattice writes that with several calm days, no snow, and near freezing temperatures, the storm slab has started to heal and yet the deep persistent slab lingers in the region. With clear skies today, he says look to see wet loose avalanches on south to southwest facing slopes later in the day as new snow cleans off of trees and rocks in steep places. Winds out of the north-north-east 15 to 22 miles per hour and gusting to 25 will see direct loading of urban avalanche paths, according to Mattice. ....
