9 & 10 News February 24, 2021 On Wednesday, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department held their annual awards ceremony. The ceremony took place virtually this year and honored a list of officers and citizens for their efforts in 2020. Eight separate Lifesaving Awards were given to officers in the sheriff’s department as well as one Citizen’s Lifesaving Award given to Nurse Kacie Cleary. Deputy Matt Mckinley earned the Law Enforcement Division Employee of the Year Award. “It’s my pleasure to award the 2020 Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Employee of the Year Award to Deputy Matt Mckinely,” said Sheriff Tom Bensley. ....
9 & 10 News Hundreds of man hours on the investigation. - GTSO Captain Randy Fewless February 4, 2021 State, local, and federal authorities are announcing a major drug arrest in Grand Traverse County. It’s a case they’ve been working for several months – coming together with the arrest of a 19 year old earlier this week. That downstate teenager is now facing multiple felony charges. Capt. Randy Fewless with the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office says the message is clear: “If you want to come to Grand Traverse County and deal narcotics, you will be held accountable.” Sheriff Tom Bensley says the drug problem is real. “It’s there. It’s underground. It’s in the shadows. Don’t think it’s not. It only sees the light of day when we’re able to make arrests.” ....
Credit Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners Ron Clous, vice chair of the Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners, showed off a rifle as a constituent voiced concerns about guns during a virtual meeting Wednesday. During the public comment period, a resident expressed concerns that members of the Proud Boys, a far-right group with a history of violence in the state, had attended a previous meeting. The group came to show support for a resolution the board eventually passed on the Second Amendment. “I can certainly appreciate people wanting to have their gun rights protected,” she said. “But . permission has been given to these activist groups to do more with their guns than go out hunting.” ....
4:19 In a pre-sentencing document one of Ritter s victims, who had recently been released from the Grand Traverse County jail and was on probation, outlined a trip she took with him to Lansing. Ritter paid for it with his county credit card. She said Ritter also told her intimate details about what happened in the jail. Ritter’s Attorney Shawn Worden argued that the victim was a “consenting adult” who began a sexual relationship with Ritter over a dating app after her release from jail. 13th Circuit Court Judge Kevin Elsenheimer disagreed, saying the victim’s statement would influence his sentence. ....
