'Everyone blaming everyone else' - Brexit, one month on

Business Journalist
At the end of a tough year for much of humanity, Irish and British people had one reason to have a joyous Christmas in 2020.
News that an EU-UK trade deal had been struck on Christmas Eve meant they could finally stop hearing about the  B word that dominated news day in, day out for the past five years or more - or at least until it had to share the headlines with a novel coronavirus.
However, in some ways, Brexit has only just begun.
The talking has pretty much ended, but the practicalities of Brexit became apparent very quickly when consumers were suddenly faced with the occasional empty supermarket shelf in the early days of January and the news that Percy Pig may not grace their sweet bowls anymore. ....

Incoming trade from Great Britain remains at 'half the level of 2020'

Incoming trade from Great Britain remains at ‘half the level of 2020’
PA
25 January 2021, 6:58 pm
Incoming trade to Ireland from Great Britain remains at about half of the level seen at the same time last year, almost a month after Brexit, a Department of Transport official has said.
Irish customs officials say they are “concerned” about the low levels of goods coming into the country, as hauliers and importers grapple with new customs red tape.
Eddie Burke, from the Department of Transport, said he would like to see the volume of incoming goods increase quicker than is currently happening.
He told a briefing at Dublin Port on Monday: “What we’ve seen is very low volumes coming across from GB. We meet with the shipping companies and keep in contact with them on daily basis. And likewise, with the hauliers. ....

Online shopping 'fundamentally changed' due to Brexit

Dublin s Q102
By Kevin O Mahony
Buying on the web has “fundamentally changed” for people in this country.
That’s due to the changes brought about by the UK’s departure from the EU.
Now that the UK has left the single market and the customs union, online shoppers here are starting to see the knock-on effects.
When going through UK sites, many of us are being hit with extra charges or big delays, while some items are unavailable altogether.
Declan Huges from the Department of Business says this is the way it is now:
This is now the new reality in relation to online shopping, so certainly from a consumer perspective lookout for where the website is hosted and check the CCPC website and then also check is it Irish or European-based. ....

Hauliers threaten stoppage if Brexit issues not sorted out

Mr Drennan said one IRHA member has had a trailer waiting to clear customs since 17 January because inspectors were “too busy” to process it.
He said the delays were having an impact “across the board” on supplies of component parts, agriculture and fisheries as well as retail and parcel delivery.
Hauliers are due to meet with the government later this week to try to overcome the difficulties.
Revenue said on Monday that 79pc of imports are being cleared through customs at Dublin Port without requiring extra checks.
A further 15pc of goods required documentation checks and 6pc were also subject to physical or veterinary checks. ....

Direct shipping between Ireland and EU ports has tripled since Brexit

SHARING OPTIONS:
The number of ferry sailings between Ireland and EU ports has tripled since the start of 2021.
The number of ferry sailings between Ireland and EU ports has tripled since the Brexit trade deal became a reality at the start of this year.
Speaking at a multi-agency briefing at Dublin Port on Monday, Eddie Burke, a member of the Brexit unit at the Department of Transport, outlined the sharp increase in direct sailings from Ireland to ports in continental Europe.
In the first 25 days of the new year, Burke said there were now five shipping companies operating 62 sailings per week in both directions between ports in Ireland (Dublin, Rosslare and Cork) and seven different ports in the EU. ....
