Austin flower basket program growing into its 26th year

(ABC 6 NEWS) - Many years ago, downtown Austin was filled with trees, but because of issues caused by birds, the city council voted to cut them down. As a way to bring back nature to the streets, flower baskets were brought in, and now 26 years later that tradition lives on thanks to a community effort.
And I was there 26 years ago when we started the program it was when I was on the city council and we wanted to do something to beautify the downtown area, Co-Chair of the Flower Committee, Bonnie Rietz said. 
Rietz was on the Austin City Council when the baskets were brought to the area, up until 2003 when the basket program almost ended. Rietz said, Our budget got cut and at that point, the council voted to stop the flower program. The council decided they would pay for part of the program and collaborate with the community to raise the rest of the money to keep the flowers in the city. Today, mo ....

AUSTIN, Minn. – Ethiopian-born Oballa Oballa was sworn in Monday to take his seat as the new Austin City Council member representing First Ward. The city staggered the swearing in of new council members and the mayor throughout the day to adhere to coronavirus pandemic social distancing guidelines with Oballa taking his oath of office shortly after 2PM.
Oballa, who was elected in November, is the first person of color elected to the Austin City Council. The city, a 15-minute drive from the Iowa-Minnesota border is named after Austin R. Nichols, the city’s first European settler. ....
