University of Cincinnati researchers studied the teeth of prehistoric horses and bison in the Arctic to learn more about their diets compared to modern species.
What they found suggests the Arctic 40,000 years ago maintained a broader diversity of plants that, in turn, supported both more and more diverse big animals.
The Arctic today is spartan compared to the wildlife-rich landscape during the ice ages of the Pleistocene epoch between 12,000 and 2.6 million years ago when wild horses, mammoths, bison and other big animals roamed the steppes and grasslands of what is now northern Canada, northern Europe, Alaska and Siberia. Short-faced bears, ground sloths and even cave lions called the 49th State home.

A previous post documented the 10 steals of home by Cubs catchers since 1920.
That post also noted that the Cubs have had exactly 500 steals of any base by their catchers during the entire Modern Era, which began in 1901.
That got me thinking about 2 other positions not usually associated with stolen bases: first base and pitcher.

MISSING SPLITS
Finding the number of steals at a specific fielding position for players during the Dead Ball Era proved challenging
Baseball-reference.com does not have career splits by position for many of those, and incomplete splits for others.

That 14-year streak ranks as the longest anyone has served as mayor under the current city charter, which dates to 1965. The record on the older city governments does not indicate whether any other mayor served longer than Alexander.
Alexander is proud of the cityâs accomplishments under his long tenure, but says it was an achievement of the entire city council. âThe city has seen a lot of improvements, such as in the school system, which is one of the best in the state. Those improvements were made possible because of the city council working together, not just because of one man,â he said.
