Tutor Tom Killen talking to students in 1975 HOUSEWIVES, office workers and company directors were among students at a new degree course at Bolton Institute of Technology back in 1975. It was the first part-time honours degree to be given the seal of approval from the Council for National Academic Awards, and its success was to be closely watched by other colleges, said course tutor Tom Killen. The 76 students who enrolled arrived for the first lesson in their five-year course on humanities in October 1975. The majority had to attend two nights a week for 30 weeks of the year.Those who had some kind of relevant qualification already were to study for four years, said Mr Killen. ....

A COUNCIL in Somerset could host a Universal Basic Income (UBI) trial, in a bid to beat poverty and equality. The motion was brought to Mendip District Council s full council on Monday (February 22) by Leader of the Green Party, councillor Shane Collins. A UBI offers a non-means-tested fixed sum paid by the state to cover the basic cost of living, which is issued to all residents regardless of whether they work, or are unemployed, or are rich or poor. The radical proposal has been widely debated across the UK in recent months. And at a meeting of Somerset County Council s full council meeting on Wednesday, February 17, councillors voted against taking part in the trial. ....
