Captain describes sailboat capsizing off NH coast; requiring Coast Guard rescue


The captain of a sailboat that capsized of the coast of New Hampshire last week is describing their rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard. Tom Cox and two of his friends were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter on Friday after his sailboat capsized. Cox and others were taking what is normally a routine trip from Maine to Gloucester. About halfway through, conditions dramatically worsened. We were doing really well with blue sky on our left and gray sky ahead of us and then we just got enveloped by it with lightning all around and rain starting to come down, Cox said. The captain said, it just blew us straight over sideways in less than two seconds. The boat was now upside down in the ocean and Cox still inside. I was trapped underneath in the cockpit under the dodger, Cox said. He managed to swim his way out and join the other two on the overturned hull, diving back under and activate an emergency position indication rescue beacon or EPIRB. July 20, 1896: One hundred and fifteen years ago today, The Journal and Tribune reported, “Mr. J.T. Burch, of the Nashville American, was in the city yesterday en route to Johnson City, where he will join Gov. Taylor.”
The Journal and Tribune was a newspaper published in Knoxville. It ceased publication in 1924. The Nashville American was published in Nashville from 1894 until 1910. There was not a daily newspaper published in Johnson City in 1896. The Comet was a weekly publication.
July 20, 1911: The Comet reported, “A meeting of the board of mayor and aldermen was held on Monday afternoon, for the purpose of considering the issuance of paving bonds and the fixing of interest. Bids will probably be opened next week and work will begin at once The matter, however, was not definitely decided, but will come up for final adjournment in a few days.” ....

Q: How did it all start for you at Ozark back in 1981?
Jordan: I was hired by Paul Steens, with help from Mark Wheeler. Mark was a teacher at the high school at the time and we knew each other through some acquaintances. He told me they had an opening. Paul was the assistant principal, AD and the football coach.
