GPICA holds public hearing on preserve project By PAULETTE LeBLANC - | May 12, 2021 The Greater Pine Island Civic Association held a public hearing on an application for a project called Pine Island Preserve and Matlacha Pass. During its monthly Zoom meeting Monday, May 3, the GPICA discussed the rezoning and special exception application request for the project that calls for a boardwalk, kayak launch and small parking lot in St. James City. TDM Consulting Senior planner, Veronica Martin and Tom Odom of Mitigation Resources, spoke on the behalf of the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast. “We know this project is controversial,” said GPICA president Helen Fox. “We know you’ll have a lot of questions, so I want to make sure we all listen carefully and respectfully to the presenters without interruption, and that the questions we ask at the end of their talk are informational rather than confrontational.” ....
On Feb. 5, the University of Georgiaâs First Amendment clinic sent its second letter to the Oconee County School Board asking for the board to increase transparency with the community, promote more virtual accessibility to board meetings and unblock members of the community on its Twitter account. The First Amendment clinic is a semester-long course offered at UGAâs law school to law students after the completion of their first year. The clinic, which first launched in August 2020, is led by clinic fellow Samantha Hamilton and director Clare Norins. Mark Bailey, Davis Wright and Amy Morgia, students of the clinic, said the course is incredibly hands-on and the clinic itself functions similarly to a small law firm. ....
But behind those big, brown eyes is a sour controversy. Bambi is something of a sacred cow. She sparked a legal dispute that still rankles county officials. An animal rights group accused the church of cruel treatment. And in the end, Bambi may be the most valuable bovine around. The land on which Bambi roams, once assessed at $1.9 million, is owned by the First Baptist Church of Southwest Broward. With the cow on site, the property is taxed on a value of just $131,760 â saving the church a whole lot of moolah. As cute as Bambi is, the county is not pleased. ....
