Published July 07. 2021 5:55PM A recent Letter to the Editor writer chided Robert Reich (an acclaimed and highly accomplished economist and occasional Day columnist) for his analysis of Chipotle’s action to increase their minimum wage to $15/hour (about $30,000 a year for a full-time employee). The writer pointed out this would result in over $500 million in additional expenses for a struggling corporate behemoth. For context, Chipotle’s 2019 income was over $5 billion; $500 million is 10% of this number. Therefore, quite simplistically, Chipotle can cover this increased cost by raising the cost of an $8 burrito by 10%, or exactly 80 cents! I doubt the new price of $8.80 will drive away current and future burrito eaters. ....
