Fund for federal virus aid OK d Council members discuss how to allocate $50 million DEVAN FILCHAK | The Journal Gazette The city has started to lay the groundwork of a plan for how to use more than $50 million in incoming federal funding, half of which is expected to arrive this week. City Controller Garry Morr went to City Council on Tuesday with a simple request – to establish a fund for the federal funding as required. What followed was a 75-minute discussion on how the funds should eventually be used. Part of the discussion stemmed from an amendment sponsored by council members Sharon Tucker, D-6th, and Russ Jehl, R-2nd, which puts minimum requirements on how much of the funding needs to be spent in the four areas identified by the federal government. ....

Final piece of Dupont trail gets initial OK DEVAN FILCHAK | The Journal Gazette The plan to complete the Dupont Road Trail is in motion after receiving support from Fort Wayne City Council on Tuesday. The council gave the ordinance initial approval during a committee meeting. The section of the trail is only about a third of a mile, but Dawn Ritchie, the city s greenways manager, said it will create connectivity within the Fort Wayne trails system, including a direct connection to the Pufferbelly Trail. The last piece of the trail, along the south side of Dupont between Coldwater and Pine Mills roads, will be 8 feet wide. The $365,796.40 project will include curb ramps that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, drainage structures, a bus pad, a park bench, crosswalks and sidewalk connections. ....
Mayor: Stimulus should pay city bills NIKI KELLY | The Journal Gazette As Congress continues to work toward another pandemic stimulus package that could include funding for state and local government, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry says federal relief could help offset personnel costs incurred because of the pandemic. When employees – mostly in the street, fire and police departments – were exposed to or contracted the virus, other workers had to be called in to work to compensate. “Overtime has been somewhat of a challenge,” he said during an interview Thursday. In addition to extra labor costs, Henry said he would like to put as much federal money toward assistance for small businesses, particularly restaurants, bars and hotels. ....
