The only place I had visited was a Christmas shop, when I was with my daughter – who also had the app, yet she was not pinged. No one phoned me from Test and Trace at any point. Lockdown soon followed, so Christmas plans were stopped, but I badly missed church on Christmas Day . and I furtively walked my young dog early each morning, masked and avoiding all human contact. I felt guilty (for being outside), angry and upset, as I certainly hadn’t been in contact with anyone infected. ....

Somehow we need to get through to the Prime Minister that extending lockdown is a catastrophic decision. More than half of voters may be happy with another month of restrictions, but that is because more than half are not significantly affected. Pubs, restaurants and shops have all been able to operate to some degree, but other industries have been closed since March 2020. The major live-events sector, for example, is still almost entirely shut down, and lives are being ruined and lost daily. There are no generous automatic grants and no business rates holidays for them. ....

Hence its “best efforts” fall well short of the EU’s belated order. With our astounding success at securing supplies of vaccines, why don’t we offer to divert any excess UK-made supplies to the EU – provided it cuts the unnecessary bureaucracy on our exports? ....
