It was a mixed bag of results for Forrest and Lamar county city elections, with most incumbents, including Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker, retaining their seats. Municipal elections were held Tuesday in Hattiesburg, Purvis, Sumrall and Lumberton. Petal s races were decided in April s primary and runoff elections. Polling places reported no issues in Tuesday s election, according to city clerks. Turnout, they said, was low. Around 10% of registered voters came out, said Purvis city clerk Catherine Kemp Tuesday. Hattiesburg city clerk Kermas Eaton said only around 30% of registered Hattiesburg voters participated. Vote totals remain unofficial until they are certified by the Mississippi Secretary of State s office. ....

(WDAM) - The Holmes and McLelland P.L.L.C. held their annual crawfish boil Saturday as they celebrated Tony Ducker, the mayoral-elect for the city of Petal. Last year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19. Residents from Petal showed up and were greeted with live music and crawfish plates. Ducker was very pleased with the turnout and the roaring support from the Petal residents. “We have the time to set certain aspects of what we want our city government to look like over the next few weeks, and we need to take a big energy into those weeks to make these things happen,” stated Ducker. “The outpouring of support, friends, family, crawfish, you really can’t beat that.” ....

The city of Petal will see some new leadership in place July 1 after Tuesday s Republican primary. Ward 5 Alderman Tony Ducker is likely to take over as the city s new mayor with a narrow 50% of the votes, but with 52 affidavit ballots to be counted, he could appear in the April 27 runoff with Jake Wilson, who is holding 23% of the votes. Incumbent Mayor Hal Marx announced in fall 2019 he would not seek a fourth term. The former journalist and schoolteacher was first elected in 2009. Ward 3 Alderman Clint Moore and opponent Blake Nobles could face each other again in the runoff. Only a few votes separated the two candidates before the affidavit ballots are counted. ....
