New Plymouth and Stratford councils are considering installing residential water meters to reduce water use in the district.
Cambridge resident Gerda Elliot doesn t give much thought to how much water she’s using in the shower, but the days of leaving the sprinkler on overnight are long gone in her town. Like close to half of the country, residential water use in the Waikato town is measured by meters so, rather than paying a uniform annual charge, they pay for what they use. Use less, pay less. Use more, pay more. “It was like any change – there was a bit of an uproar against it,” Elliot says.

The tide has yet to turn in favour of water meters in New Plymouth. On day three of the New Plymouth District Council hearings on its draft $3 billion 10-year spending plan, there was little support for one of the most controversial ideas – the introduction of water meters to 26,000 homes. If approved, the $18 million installation job would start in July. Real bills won’t start arriving for a year, with residents only receiving mock bills while they get used to having to watch their water use.

Greg Mackay unsuccessfully stood for the New Plymouth mayoralty in 2019. On Thursday he took councillors to task over a proposal to install water meters.
At the other end of the scale, Murray Chong, Harry Duynhoven, Colin Johnston and Dinnie Moeahu had no conflicts listed as at the end of March.
