Special events made our community

Just about every resident has an opinion about the special events held in our town each year. The different events will be the subject of our Fountain Hills history lesson for this week and at least the following week.
We have had a number of celebrities as a result of the financial support provided by the developer, McCulloch Properties, and later, MCO Properties. The developer gained exposure for its properties. The clubs expanded their treasuries by selling food items at the larger events.
“Actually, we never really sold many lots on the day of the concerts as the people just wanted to listen to the music and look at the fantastic scenery surrounding this community,” said Bill Brown, who was among the first salesmen hired by McCulloch on the original sales team. ....

It was the fourth round of the 1989 French Open. A 17-year-old Michael Chang was up against world No 1 and three-time Roland Garros champion Ivan Lendl. Chang had battled a two-set deficit and painful cramps to force a decider. He somehow managed to break Lendl’s serve and led 4-3, just two games away from one of the biggest upsets in tennis history. But his will to compete was fading rapidly and he could barely move because of the cramps. That’s when he decided to use a trick the world had never seen. At 15-30, he brought out the underarm serve. Lendl picked it early and ran in, the ball spun sharply but he managed to get the return across. Chang moved to his right and whipped a forehand, the ball clipped the top of the net and Lendl couldn’t return it. Chang won that game and the next one to close out the match. A few days later, he went on to become the youngest male Grand Slam champio ....

News of the Week: The Cold Side of the Jet Stream, Rock Stars, and a February Canapalooza

Brrrrrrrrrr
It’s weird to think that this is the same winter during which I’ve complained about the lack of cold and snow and overall winter-ness. This week Mother Nature decided to show us that, yes indeed, winter is real and it’s
spectacular. Not only have the temps been somewhere between
Ice Station Zebra and freezing, we’ve had a parade of storms.
There’s another one due this Sunday, and then more on Tuesday. A few inches expected with each one, though the TV meteorologists haven’t been exactly on-the-nose with their forecasts. There’s so much technology, so many fancy mobile weather vehicles, so many computer models (European! American! That other one!) that it just confuses everything. When you give all of the possible weather outcomes, you’re really giving none. ....

Tony Trabert, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion and former No. 1 player who went on to successful careers as a Davis Cup captain, broadcaster and executive, has died. He was 90.
The Tennis Hall of Fame member’s death Feb. 3 at his home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was confirmed by his daughter, Brooke Trabert Dabkowski.
Trabert won three of the four major singles titles in 1955, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals without losing a set. He was ranked No. 1 in singles in 1953 and 1955.
Trabert also won five Grand Slam titles in men’s doubles, including four with Vic Seixas. Trabert won all of his major titles as an amateur before he became a barnstorming professional and part of the long fight for open tennis. ....
