CivicCon speaker Jill Miller of Bethesda Inc talks health disparities


Miller is the president and CEO of Bethesda Inc., a Cincinnati nonprofit dedicated to fueling innovation and reducing health disparities in the Greater Cincinnati area. On May 17, Miller will appear at CivicCon to discuss how hospitals and communities can work together to ensure all people have an equal chance to achieve good health.
In an early May interview with the News Journal, Miller noted that health disparities are the differences in outcomes between different individuals and populations. As an example, she noted that Black men die of diabetes at higher rates than white men, and Black women are much more likely to suffer birth complications than white women. ....

Pensacola Scuba Shack from 1910 to be demolished


A 111-year-old building near Pensacola s Palafox Wharf area will be torn down to make way for a multi-story residential development.
The building at 711 S. Palafox St. was the long-time home of the Scuba Shack, which closed after the owners retired and sold the building to Pensacola resident Jim English last year. 
The Pensacola Planning Board gave final approval Tuesday for the demolition of the building. 
Because the building is more than 50 years old, the city s Architectural Review Board had to review the demolition request. The ARB voted in December to delay the demolition permit for 60 days, which pushed back the Planning Board hearing on the issue until Tuesday. ....

Community Health plans vaccine clinics, Pensacola Publix, Walmart, CVS


Community Health of Northwest Florida is removing the barriers for eligible residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine by allowing them to bring a current prescription bottle that treats an underlying medical condition that puts them at higher risk for the disease.
The organization hosted a walk-in clinic Monday at the Brownsville Community Center and is accepting appointments for three clinics this week, including one evening clinic to accommodate working families.
The clinics are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Friday and from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Brownsville Community Center, 3200 W. De Soto St. Those who qualify for the vaccine can call the Community Health COVID-19 Vaccine Call Center at 850-439-3358 to make an appointment. ....
