Many lawmakers regret that decision and are now scrambling to seize what seems like a second chance. The state of Alaska is receiving more than $1 billion in flexible spending money from the American Rescue Plan, and lawmakers want to keep control in their hands. The debate over how to spend the money is looking like the defining issue of the last month of the Legislature’s regular session, multiple lawmakers said. It has overshadowed the traditional debates about the Permanent Fund dividend, slowed work on the state budget and at least for one year shelved persistent worries about a long-term revenue shortfall. ....
Print article The state of Alaska paid more than $81,000 to relocate former commissioner and current Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kelly Tshibaka and her family to Anchorage in 2019 an outsized bill she says was caused by a state policy that forced her to accept bids from fraudulent movers, driving up the cost. Tshibaka resigned March 29, the same day she announced she is running for the Senate seat held by Lisa Murkowski. She has made saving the government money a centerpiece of her campaign, touting her accomplishments cutting costs in her department as commissioner. State regulations require employees to pay back a portion of relocation expenses if they stay at their job for less than two years after the completion of their move. Tshibaka resigned two years and 39 days after the date her move ended. ....

Man arrested for spitting at police, trying to attack health care workers, police say January 31, 2021 10:48 AM Logan Rude MADISON, Wis. Police arrested a man Saturday afternoon after he spat at police officers and tried attacking health care workers at a local hospital. Officers initially responded to the Subway on Watts Road in response to a report that a man was threatening customers and employees, according to an incident report. When police arrived, they tried stopping the man from making threats, but he continued regardless of their efforts. According to the report, the man, 33-year-old Tony Olson, continued to resist officers as they took him into custody and spat on officers as they tried to get him into a police car. ....
