It isn’t really news to hear that experiencing racism, both interpersonal and structural, is bad for a person’s health. Any member of a racial or ethnic minority in this country has understood that racism is harmful to their health, in some form, since this mass of land was first called the United States. What is news is the acceptance of the anecdotal with the scientific evidence, and taking measurable steps to track and repair the harm to public health that has come from racism.
“What we know is this: racism is a serious public health threat that directly affects the well-being of millions of Americans,” Rochelle P. Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a recent statement.

In September of 2020, California was in the midst of a record-setting heat wave. The hot and dry conditions fueled fires all over the state, and smoke from wildfires hundreds of miles away hung over the Bay Area for weeks. Andrew Kornblatt woke up one morning at his home in Berkeley to find that the air had grown cool and still, and the sky was an eerie orange.
Delaware County Fair to return this year July 12-24
MUNCIE, Ind. Another sign that things are slowly returning to normal locally is that the Delaware County Fair is back on for 2021 after being abruptly canceled last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Mark Di Fabio, the Delaware County Fair Board president, told the Delaware County commissioners on Monday that the fair would be back this year. The 4-H portion of the fair will take place July 12-21. The Midway will be open July 19-24.
Another traditional event related to the fair, the Delaware County Fair Queen contest, will be at 7 p.m. June 12 at Muncie Central High School. Applications are available at delawarecountyfair.net.

WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service recommended, and the Department of the Treasury has approved, the selection of 24 new members to serve on the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel for 2021.
The new TAP members will join returning members to round out the panel of 67 volunteers for 2021. The new members were selected from a pool of approximately 300 interested individuals who applied during an open recruitment period last spring and from alternate members who applied in prior years.
National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins recently shared her appreciation for all TAP volunteers: I am grateful for these citizens volunteering their time and talent to the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel. I am very proud of the accomplishments of the TAP last year, and I look forward to the TAP bringing its valuable taxpayer perspective in recommending changes to tax administration to achieve the quality service that taxpayers expect and deserve.
A GROUND-BREAKING project which helps Glaswegians who are living with dementia has been trialling innovative new ways of working during the pandemic. Dementia Dog, a collaboration between Alzheimer Scotland and UK-wide charity Dogs for Good, uses specially trained dogs to help people with dementia and their carers. When the country went into lockdown, the project had to find new ways to work with its clients to help them stay connected and reduce social isolation. It came up with an array of new plans, including virtual therapy walks, online Doggy Bingo and physiotherapy sessions. Carla Haizelden, a Dementia Community Dog handler alongside pup Billy, said: “Doggy Bingo is very straightforward and easy to play. The players can watch Billy go and fetch a ball with a random number on it from a container. He passes it to me and I read out the number.
