Jurors have convicted Huntsville, Alabama police officer William Ben Darby of murder in the fatal shooting of Jeff Parker, a suicidal man.
On Friday, a Madison County jury reached a verdict on the second day of deliberations in the trial of Darby, who was on duty when he shot and killed Parker on April 3, 2018.
Parker called 911 on the afternoon of his death, saying that he was armed and suicidal. When the first two officers arrived at Parker s home, they found him sitting on a couch and holding a gun to his head. ....

An Alabama police officer was convicted Friday of murdering a suicidal man while on duty.
Three years ago, Huntsville police officer William Ben Darby shot and killed Jeff Parker, who was suicidal and had called the police for help, AL.com reported.
The Madison County jury debated for two hours, and Circuit Judge Donna Pate set Darby s bail at $100,000, ordering him straight to jail from the courtroom.

Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray said in a press release that he is “shocked” by the decision.
“We are in the first stages of shock,” McMurray said. “While we thank the jury for their service in this difficult case, I do not believe Officer Darby is a murderer.” ....

Huntsville Police Officer William Ben Darby has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of a suicidal man who was holding a gun to his own head. A jury returned a guilty verdict on Friday. Darby was indicted in the killing of Jeffrey Parker, who was fatally shot on April 3, 2018 after calling 911 to report he was suicidal and armed. While prosecutors contend that 27-year-old Darby killed Parker without cause, the defense argued the shooting was justified because Parker posed a threat to Darby and other officers. Defense attorney Robert Tuten told the jury that Darby had to shoot. Darby, who was on duty on April 3, 2018 when he responded testified that he shot Parker in self defense, as well as in the defense of other officers. Huntsville police officer William Ben Darby testified on Wednesday that he shot and killed Jeff Parker three years ago because he feared for his own life and the lives of his fellow officers.
Darby testified that Parker, who was sitting on a couch with a gun to his own head, posed an “imminent threat” to the police officers who were at his west Huntsville home on the afternoon of April 3, 2018.
