Deputy speakers seek stiff penalties vs gov t negligence in pandemic response – Manila Bulletin

Published April 26, 2021, 12:33 PM In response to growing public indignation against alleged government negligence and lapses in addressing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, four key officials of the House of Representatives filed a bill proposing to penalize state officials lethargic response to the on-going national public health emergency. Deputy Speakers Michael L. Romero Ph. D. (1Pacman Partylist); Eddie Villanueva (CIBAC Partylist); Bernadette Herrera (Bagong Henerasyon Partylist) and Bienvenido Abante Jr. (6th District, Manila) co-authored House Bill 9230 that seeks to nudge government officials to act more responsibly and swiftly in addressing the public health needs of Filipinos in times of crises. Also signing the bill as co-authors were Reps. Domingo Rivera (CIBAC Partylist) and Allan Reyes (PDP-Laban, Quezon City).

Published January 29, 2021, 11:09 PM A House of Representatives official representing the anti-corruption partylist CIBAC lamented on Friday the country’s dismal rating in the recently released 2020 Corruption Perception Index that was taken while the whole nation grappled with the adverse economic and public health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Domingo Rivera, disclosed that the Philippines remained below the 2020 Asia Pacific average score of 45 when it registered a low 34 which is a retention of the same number in 2019. However, Villanueva and Rivera said the rating given by the global watchdog Transparency International ranked  Philippines two rungs below its 2019 level.
