New Bern drug violations almost doubled last year compared to 2021

NBPD strives to improve the local community, including the youth

When it comes to law enforcement and the community, New Bern s police department has several ways to bring the community closer, even sometimes when it is least expected.   According to the New Bern s annual police report, officers remain involved with the community in an attempt to reduce crime and increase partnerships within the community. NBPD has participated in events such as Coffee with a Cop, National Night Out, Citizens Police Academy and other city functions to engage casually with the community. More recently, NBPD connected with specifically the youth in police summer programs and also had instances of engaging with the community unanticipated.

NBPD signed a contract early July for $190k worth of new body cams

The New Bern police department budgeted $190,000 worth of new body cams for officers and signed the contract earlier in July, but the body cams have not gone underway just yet. According to Lt. Donald McInnis of NBPD, there will be 90 body cams used from that $190,000 budget and that s just for this year s payment. The equipment has not been received as of now by McInnis or the police department, but the budget was accumulated over the course of five years before the contract was signed in July. The goal is to have them distributed to the patrol officers and officers who are mainly going to be interacting with citizens, McInnis said. Some of those cameras will also be distributed to our various specialized units as well.

New Bern area traffic, gas and U S 70 update headed into 4th of July

This year’s travel for the Fourth of July Weekend is set to be the second highest on record as 47.7 million Americans pack their bags, only 2.5 percent lower than 2019.  Around 1.4 million North Carolinians are projected to travel at least once between July 1 and July 5. Despite gas prices being the most expensive nationwide since 2014, 43.6 million Americans opted for a road trip this Independence Day Weekend and 1.2 million are North Carolinians, according to a press release from AAA Carolinas. The current average gas price in the New Bern area is $2.80 a gallon compared to $2.01 in 2020 and $2.56 in 2019. Since the gas shortage that occurred earlier in the summer, things should be back to normal, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
