The historic wreck of a more than century-old Mangawhai-built schooner will soon return to the coastal town. Mangawhai has a long history and this ship is a part of that, Anna Curnow, Kaipara Deputy Mayor said of the return of the Daring.

Violist Richard O Neill wins Grammy s Best Classical Instrumental Solo

Richard O Neill, a Korean American violist, won the Grammy Awards Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his Theofanidis: Concerto For Viola And Chamber Orchestra, Sunday, local time.
It is his first Grammy win after three nominations in the past. This is a great day for the viola. Thank you to the recording academy for this honor of a lifetime. To composer Christopher Theofanidis, conductor David Alan Miller, producer Silas Brown and the wonderful Albany Symphony. My love to you all. During this most challenging time for all musicians, my eternal thanks goes to my family, the Tacus Quartet and CU Boulder for keeping me alive. Stay safe and healthy everyone, O Neil said during the awards ceremony held online after winning the award.

Paul Cassidy has been violist of the Brodsky Quartet for four decades. He is a Northern Irish Catholic, brought up in Derry as the last of 16 children – the next youngest may have been abducted soon after birth, just one of the tragedies the family had to bear.
It seems to have been quite a dysfunctional family, with a father who did not encourage any of his tribe of offspring. Cassidy also had to deal with his country’s Catholic education system – having his hand beaten black and blue, days before his Grade 7 violin exam, was typical. Then there was the discrimination that Catholics suffered in every sphere of life. In the case of the Cassidy clan, it was intensified because they had the affrontery to acquire a house in a part of town that the Protestants considered their fiefdom.

Purpose-built museum for salvaged 150-year-old ship

A schooner that had been buried underneath the sand at Muriwai since 1865 will soon be housed in a purpose-built museum at the Historic Village in Mangawhai.
The Daring trading vessel was on its way to Manukau when she became a victim of gale-force winds, which threatened to wreck her on the Kaipara Bar.
Her crew managed to pull her clear of the bar but she was nudged ashore some 12km further south where she would remain for more than 150 years.
