Corpus Christi warming shelters don’t see much usage Saturday Patrick Johnstone/KRIS 6 News By: Patrick Johnstone and last updated 2021-02-13 19:20:49-05 CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi has seven day-time warming shelters available for people to use to get out of the cold. The shelters are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through Wednesday, Feb. 17. The locations are: Broadmoor Senior Center, 1651 Tarlton St.; Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, 654 Graham Rd.; Garden Senior Center, 5325 Greely Dr.; Oveal Williams Senior Center, 1414 Martin Luther King Dr.; Ben F. McDonald Public Library, 4044 Greenwood Dr.; La Retama Central Library, 805 Comanche St.; and Owen R. Hopkins Public Library, 3202 McKinzie Rd.

People living in South Texas are not accustomed to extremely low temperatures and freezing weather conditions that are forecasted in the coming days. The City of Corpus Christi will open the following senior centers and library locations as warming centers beginning  Friday, February 12 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from  Saturday, February 13 through Wednesday, February 17 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The warming centers may remain open potentially through Thursday, February 18 depending on forecasted severe cold and inclement weather. “Our City is opening warming centers early in order to protect those who are without shelter or heat,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said. “I believe helping others who may be threatened by the cold temperatures must be a community priority.”
