Computer scams are on the rise in Nova Scotia, RCMP say

Posted: Jun 14, 2021 7:52 PM AT | Last Updated: June 14 RCMP say there s been an increase in remote-access scams, which occur when an individual receives a phone call or an email from someone pretending to be a tech support employee who requests access to their computer to fix an issue. (CBC) Some computer repair shops in Nova Scotia have been seeing a rise in online scams since the COVID-19 pandemic began and the RCMP is warning the public to be on alert. Nova Scotia RCMP said Monday there s been an increase in all cybercrime during the pandemic, but especially remote-access scams. Remote-access scams occur when an individual receives a phone call or an email from someone pretending to be a tech support employee of a large computer or cybersecurity company, like Microsoft or Norton 360.

BLACKSTONE – Residents of Blackstone will head to the polls for the annual town election this Monday, April 5. The top races this year include two open seats on the Board of Selectmen. Former Selectman Ryan Chamberland is challenging Selectman Daniel Keefe for his seat, while political newcomers Ryan Barry and Tanya Polak are facing off for the unexpired term vacated by Taylor Greene earlier this year. Voters will also choose a Blackstone representative for the Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee, with Keri Gaudette and Timothy Howell facing off for the seat. The ballot also includes several uncontested races and a vacant School Committee seat that drew no candidates and expires next year.
