2020 O'Briens Winners Announced | Standardbred Canada

Standardbred Canada announced the winners of 2020 O’Brien Awards, which honour Canada’s best in harness racing over the past season, during a Virtual Gala videostreamed on standardbredcanada.ca on Sunday, January 31.
Held virtually due to the provincial lockdown in Ontario, this year marked the 32nd edition of the O’Brien Awards, named in honour of the late Joe O’Brien, an outstanding horseman and member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
Richard Moreau added a record eighth O’Brien trophy to his mantle in the Trainer of the Year Category after a season which saw him top the earnings and win charts for Canadian trainers. Based in Puslinch, Ont., Moreau is one of the country’s busiest trainers, sending postward 1,604 starters that made 237 trips to the winner’s circle and earned more than $3.6 million in purses. ....

Daley Admires 'Anoka' Attitude | Standardbred Canada

Anoka Hanover might not have been the hardest working horse in harness racing last season, but as far as Dan Patch Award-winning two-year-old trotters over a span of almost 25 years, she was nearly at the top.
The Noel Daley-trained Anoka Hanover won 10 of 14 starts in 2020 and captured the Dan Patch Award for best two-year-old trotting filly. Going back to 1997 only one two-year-old Dan Patch Award winning trotter female or male exceeded 13 races: the filly Check Me Out, who won 14 of 16 in 2011. The most recent two-year-old trotting male to surpass 13 starts was Malabar Man, who won 13 of 15 races in 1996.
“14 starts are a lot to give a two-year-old, but she was as good or better at the end than she was early,” Daley said. “She was never the prettiest-gaited horse. But she had a good attitude, a good head on her. I was very happy with the way her year progressed.” ....

Rookies Give Blais Best Year Yet | Standardbred Canada

Not many people can head into this weekend s O’Brien Awards knowing they have an award secured, but trainer Luc Blais is in that rare position.
The Quebec native, who has become the man in charge training Serge Godin’s Determination Stable, conditions both nominees for Two-Year-Old Trotting Male of the Year Macho Martini and On A Streak. Blais also trains nominee for Two-Year-Old Trotting Filly of the Year Donna Soprano, but can sit on the edge of his seat as that filly competes for the title against Paul Walker trainee Imextraspecial.
“It was an amazing year,” Blais said. “You know, when you win an O’Brien, for me, it’s the best [award] you can win. Because it touches a lot of people that are around that horse. The owner can be part of that, the groom, the blacksmith.lots of people are involved and they re very happy. That’s why it’s very special when a horse wins an O’Brien Award. We had a lot of thrills this year with the two-year-olds.” ....

Ontario-sired pacing colt Tall Dark Stranger was named the 2020 U.S. Horse of the Year as part of the Dan Patch Annual Awards Banquet held virtually on Saturday (Jan. 16).
The United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA), the leading media organization in North American harness racing, has announced the winners of its Dan Patch Awards balloting for excellence exhibited among both equines and humans. The “best of the best” are normally honoured at the writers’ Dan Patch Annual Awards Banquet, but that event was cancelled this year due to the ongoing health crisis, so a special Virtual Awards show was broadcast Saturday. ....
