UMATILLA â The Oregon Department of Corrections has announced the hiring of a new superintendent at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla, according to a press release. Erin Reyes, a former law enforcement, state government and public safety official with more than 25 years of experience, was announced as the new superintendent on Feb. 22. âI never would have imagined my life and career path would lead me to where I am today,â Reyes said. Reyes steps into the role after Tyler Blewett resigned in December 2020 after holding the position for a year. Soon after, the prison was rocked by one of the largest COVID-19 outbreaks seen in Oregon prisons since the pandemic began. ....
UMATILLA â Brandon Baker was already feeling symptoms when officials at Two Rivers Correctional Institution carried out a sick inmate from two cells down. Another inmate, four cells away, said he saw the same inmate lying on his bed ill for nearly two weeks, receiving little care. âHe looked like death,â the inmate, who asked for anonymity out of fear of retaliation, said. âI walked by and told him, âGet better broâ and he didnât even move. Like, comatose on his bed.â The sick inmate, who was between 50 and 60 years old and was serving his sentence at TRCI, reportedly died on Saturday, Jan. 2, after testing positive for COVID-19, according to a press release that did not identify him by name. The prison was unwilling to provide the East Oregonian with any information regarding why Blewett resigned. Blewett held the official position of superintendent since December of 2019. He had been acting superintendent since the previous June, after former superintendent Troy Bowser went on administrative leave during an investigation. Bowser resigned the following September. Kevin Jackson has assumed the role as acting superintendent for TRCI.
