Tributes have been paid to a well-known former Tyrone GAA trainer who has died at the age of 47. Fergal McCann, who hailed from Augher, was part of Mickey Harte s management team when the Red Hand County clinched the All-Ireland Football title in 2005 and 2008. Mr McCann also worked as a schools coach for Tyrone GAA but was best known for his key role with Harte s squad. His stint with the Red Hands included helping guide them to three Ulster Championship titles. His passing was announced last night by Tyrone GAA and Tyrone County chairperson, Michael Kerr, who said in the Facebook post that Mr McCann was a true gentleman in life even in the white hot seat of championship battles . ....
When Chris McGale personally pitched his new memoir, The Million Dollar Irishman, to Christopher Little, JK Rowling’s literary agent, Little cut him short by saying, “Oh, no, not another Irish sob story.” He must not have heard the whole tale because, in fact, McGale, in his own retelling, is more Michael Douglas in Wall Street than Frank McCourt in Angela’s Ashes, and the melancholic mood music that Little feared is soon drowned out by a deafening cacophony of champagne glasses clinking and cha-ching sounds. The former Merrill Lynch head honcho frequently says things like “I dominated people with an attitude” or “I was the star player on the team” or “I was betting more in a week than the price of a house in Omagh.” The book is replete with his wagers and winnings, the big business deals he cut and his millions in earnings. The British government plot to divide Ireland was long in the making and it was accomplished by a combination of deception and terror. The principle of Partition was first introduced by British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith in the House of Commons when he proposed “county option with a time limit” by which any of the nine counties of Ulster might vote out of Home Rule for a period of six years.
