It was a surreal feeling for Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School girls basketball coach Dave Callahan when his players came out to warm up in the high school gymnasium before their season opener against Red Bank Regional High School on Jan. 27 with no fans in the stands.
The surreal feeling for Callahan signified how different the 2021 season has been with a shortened preseason and coaches trying to figure out ways to get their players ready to go in just two weeks by following protocols necessitated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. ....

NCALL Loan Fund awarded $557K to support nonprofits

The NCALL Loan Fund was selected to receive a capital grant of $557,000 by the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, a program of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Mission-driven CDFIs such as the loan fund use the capital grants to increase lending and investment activity in low-income and economically distressed communities across the nation.
“We are grateful for this grant and the wonderful impact it will have on the Delmarva Peninsula,” said Karen Speakman, NCALL executive director. “It will allow us to continue to provide lending for much-needed housing and community facilities.”
The loan fund will use its award to provide loans and technical assistance to nonprofit organizations on the Delmarva Peninsula that have been acutely affected by COVID-19. “Our borrowers have been providing critical services to their communities during the pandemic,” said Dave Callahan, loan fund manager. “W ....

Years ago, when I taught screenwriting at the University of Bridgeport, we discussed how a superhero must not only struggle morally to do the right thing but he/she must also battle a worthy villain who epitomizes a powerful, evil threat.
When “Wonder Woman” (2017) debuted, the origin story of the Amazonian princess was sensational! It detailed her background, childhood and how she fell in love with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), a dashing-but-doomed WWI pilot. Director Patty Jenkins proved female super-heroes were just as mighty as men. ....

Maybe coming across a blockbuster superhero movie after nearly a year of the speciesâ disappearance from the wild can only result in letdown. Maybe watching one of those big-tent action-fantasy spectaculars on the small screen is just asking for trouble.
Or maybe âWonder Woman 1984â is the muddled disappointment it appears to be.
I write this with a heavy heart because the 2017 âWonder Woman,â the one that let Gal Gadot replace Lynda Carter as the face of the venerable DC Comics character in the popular imagination, was a tonic. If it wasnât the best superhero movie of all time, it was the best one from DC in a while, and watching the strikingly confident Israeli actress step into Diana Princeâs sandals carried nearly the same charge as when Christopher Reeve put on Supermanâs cape back in 1978.
