May 24, 2021 1:05 pm PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The race for the next Governor of Rhode Island is already kicking off after Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea announces her run for the 2022 election. Gorbea was first elected into office in 2014 and has served as the Secretary of State for 6 and a half years. She joins the race as a Democrat and the first Latina in New England to run in a gubernatorial race. She’s one of multiple candidates expected to run and the second to formally announce her stakes in the race. Dr. Luis Daniel Munoz, who ran as an independent in 2018, has also formally announced his candidacy as a Democrat. ....

They re not as panic-inducing as the paper-towel shortage of 2020, but supply-chain disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic are still keeping goods off store shelves, even as Rhode Island joins other states in lifting virtually all COVID restrictions affecting businesses. COVID was a tsunami for all grocers, said Susan Budlong, a spokeswoman for Dave s Fresh Marketplace, a Rhode Island chain of grocery stores. COVID was a force to be reckoned with. It hurt people. It scared people. It shook people to the core. But, Budlong said, the severe shortages of the early days of the pandemic are gone, with only sporadic shortages of products now. ....
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) today announced the award of $40,000 in matching grants to help communities and businesses invest in boat pump-out facilities across Rhode Island. The grants are funded under the US Fish & Wildlife Service Clean Vessel Act (CVA) and support two projects in Narragansett Bay and one on Block Island. Since 1994, DEM has awarded more than $2 million in CVA grants. “Over the years, projects funded with pump-out grants have been instrumental in helping to reduce a major source of contamination to the state’s coastal waters, including the bacteria that can cause shellfish closures,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “We are pleased to award these grants to improve Rhode Island’s boat pump-out infrastructure so that activities like boating and shellfishing can grow and thrive.” ....
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has begun its environmental review of the 880MW Revolution Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut. BOEM has today issued its notice of intent (NoI) to prepare the required environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project’s construction and operations plan. The publication of the NoI opens a 30-day public comment period. During this time, BOEM will hold three virtual public scoping meetings and accept comments to inform the preparation of the EIS. BOEM director Amanda Lefton said: “Public input plays an essential role in identifying and mitigating any potential impacts from proposed energy development activities. ....
