JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Duval County Public School Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene has released recommendations that the School Board change the names of the six schools currently named for Confederate leaders.
The names were released via email Tuesday in a press release from DCPS.
Joseph Finegan Elementary School would become Anchor Academy
Stonewall Jackson Elementary School would become Hidden Oaks Elementary School ....

For the past several months, local activist groups have urged Duval County Schools to change the names of schools that are named after controversial historic figures, most notably leaders of the Confederacy.
“Our goal was to give our community a voice in this process, Superintendent Diana Greene said. Constituents have participated in dozens of meetings, and now thousands have shared their voice through this balloting process. My job is to synthesize all of this input and bring the recommendation that I feel is best for our schools, our community, and most important, our students.” ....

The National Leadership Conference for the Business Professionals of America included 28 local students.
Business Professionals of America is a youth organization which provides leadership and business opportunities for middle school and high school students to prepare them for their future careers.
The skills that students learn through participating in a variety of business experiences are beneficial and will help prepare students for a career in the workforce, coach Mindy Eggleston said.
The conference took place virtually from April 26-May 8, 2021; over 6,000 students across the nation participated. At this conference, students participated in business related events and competed for the top spots. Hillsdale Community Schools had a total of 28 students who placed in the top ten of the nation. ....

HILLSDALE - As the COVID-19 pandemic upended life for everyone, students have faced a variety of burdens, ranging from cancelled events to mental health and financial issues.
In order to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education, various surveys have been conducted by sites like Science Digest to recover the causal impact of the pandemic on students current and expected outcomes.
One study found that due to COVID-19: 13 percent of students have delayed graduation, 40 percent have lost a job, internship, or job offer, and 29 percent expect to earn less at age 35.
Moreover, these effects have been highly heterogeneous. One quarter of students increased their study time by more than 4 hours per week due to COVID-19, while another quarter decreased their study time by more than 5 hours per week.
