Print Musician-turned-mystery-writer Corey Lynn Fayman took top honors in the 2021 San Diego Book Awards for “Ballast Point Breakdown,” a wisecracking novel that features a guitar-playing detective, Navy SEALs, and trained dolphins. The book received the Geisel Award, a best-in-show prize named after Ted “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, who wrote many of his best-selling and influential children’s books while living in La Jolla. “Ballast Point Breakdown” is the fourth book by Fayman, who has also worked day jobs as a keyboard player, sound-designer, and college instructor. All the stories feature Rolly Waters, an eccentric detective the author created (he writes on his website) out of “boredom and a warped sense of literary ambition.” ....

Print Del Mar author David Hoffer released a science-fiction novel last fall about a father who comes to realize that he and his daughter have extraterrestrial origins. The protagonist, Stephen, has a voice in his head that convinces him that there’s a way to bring his daughter back to life. He eventually finds out the fate of the universe is in the balance. The tagline of the novel, “Melody: A First Contact Techno-Thriller” is “a melody from the stars can save humanity, but only if Stephen can awaken the alien within.” Hoffer said the novel was about five years in the making, during which he took writing classes. ....
Gainesville man given 6 months work release in vehicular homicide case A Gainesville man was given six months in Hall County work release and must stay away from four-wheelers in a 2017 vehicular homicide case, according to court documents. Justin Farid Castillo, 22, was found not guilty March 26 by a Hall County jury on first-degree vehicular homicide but was convicted on a second-degree charge in the wreck that killed Vanessa Kay Lindsey. Georgia State Patrol previously told The Times Lindsey’s vehicle was heading northbound around 6:30 p.m. Dec. 30, 2017, on Harmony Church Road in East Hall. The car hit the rear of a black four-wheeler, driven by Castillo, that did not have brake lights or tail lights, according to state patrol. ....
