Tech Talk: Engineering Awards, Solar-Powered Go-Karts, and Martian Volcanoes

With a major research university right in our backyard, a strong military presence and innovative companies throughout the metro region, there’s often a plethora of interesting science and technology news to be found in Southern Arizona. Here’s a breakdown of the most interesting recent developments.

Design Day. Senior students in the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering recently presented their longtime projects for the college’s annual Craig M. Berge Design Day. Unlike previous years, for 2021 the 99 student teams presented their projects over video. But similar to previous years, multiple student teams took home large awards for this work. This year, more than $46,000 was awarded to various student teams working with industry and university sponsors. The winners of the $7,500 Craig M. Berge Dean’s Award for Most Outstanding Project created a “solar-powered, autonomous rover” to monitor Oso Grande, which is Tucson Electric Power’s win ....

Salt, water and the hunt for life — Here are the biggest discoveries about Mars in the last three months

NASA
Scientists have long speculated that there is organic salt on Mars, and NASA thinks that it has found a way to prove it.
The study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, indirectly points to the presence of organic salts using data from the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) a portable chemistry lab inside the Curiosity rover.
In order to confirm what the data is suggesting, the lead author of the paper, James MT Lewis, has suggested using the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument. The task is challenging because billions of years of radiation have erased or broken apart most organic matter. ....

New Mars Update: Mysterious Rocks and a Recent Volcanic Eruption

In a new Mars update (the first update can be read here), mysterious rocks have been found and there may have been a fairly recent volcanic eruption.
NASA’s Perseverance Rover discovered some unusual rocks in the Jezero Crater and has been studying them with two of its instruments – the rock-zapping SuperCam laser and the WATSON (“Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and Engineering”) camera.
It’s unclear whether these rocks are sedimentary or volcanic. If they are volcanic in origin, this would be a huge help for experts understanding the history of the crater that billions of years ago had a lake and a river delta. If the rocks turn out to be sedimentary, they may have been created over a long period of time from sand, silt, and clay which may hold clues to ancient Martian life (if there ever was any). ....
